HTC Droid Incredible Stock (For Now)

The Droid has been rooted. You can read about, and get it, here http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=210&t=567.

I don't know much about this, yet, but from what I understand, this will allow for a lot of user customization. Please feel free to fill us in if you know more about it.

Rooting your phone does void your warranty. Do this at your own risk.

Nice find, although I'm not too sure what it means to have the Droid Rooted. Seems like it enables the ability to do some things I personally don't feel the need for, but good find none-the-less! Thanks spotmark!

One of the biggest things, as I understand it, is the ability to download apps to the memory card. We'll be able to have apps galore.  Grin

Also, after a little more development, we will be able to install the native pinch and zoom from the Milestone.

What does "rooted" mean as it applies to a Cellphone?

Briefly, it give you access to the Droid's Operating System (OS).  If you aren't familiar with what a OS is - WindowsXP, Vista, Unix, etc. are OS's.    Once you have Command Line access - you have access to the entire Droid OS which gives you access to all its features, etc.  In theory, you now have access to all restricted area's of the Droid which (in theory) means you can completely customize your Droid.

Oh yea, and you can pretty much kiss your Droid Warranty goodbye!

I am going to root mine tonight. There isn't a whole lot you can do with a rooted Droid at the moment, but you can install AdFree, from the market, which will get rid of those annoying ads on apps like Pandora.

So I had some free time at work just now, and I figured I would root my Droid. After I installed the file on my SD card, and ran it, it was done in about five seconds. I then downloaded AdFree from the market, ran that, and fired up Pandora. Voila, no more stupid Cadillac ads at the bottom of the screen.  Smiley

I can't wait for some custom ROMs to start appearing. I especially want to install the Sense UI.

Keep us updated on what you are able to do with your Droid now that it is rooted. Do you think it has the kind of potential that the Jailbroken iPod Touches and iPhones used to have? Or is this an entirely different animal?

Just rooted my wife's Droid as well. Amazing how easy, and fast it is to do. Yes, rooting is basically the Android equivilent of jailbreaking. It opens up the phone to all sorts of customizing. Like I said, once they figure out how to get the Sense UI, from the HTC Hero, I'll be installing that on both phones.

This is excellent! Is there anything else interesting from the Market that you see right off the bat? And is this detectable by Verizon and could end up getting people in trouble of some sort? Keep us informed on how it goes, I'm somewhat considering getting it rooted myself.
