Hello all. I searched for an answer to my question, but had no luck, so...

I text very often, and sometimes accidentally  go over the character limit and don't know it. My old phone had a counter that told me how many characters I had left to input before going over.
Is there an option on my Droid that displays such a counter in the text screen?
Thanks in advance.

The easiest thing to do is just jump into the "Market" and download Handcent SMS (Free).  This pup will not only let you know how many character's you've keyed in but a ton of other neat features.

Thanks for the advice gents.
I just received a google voice number.  It is pretty confusing to use GV's features so I have not used it so far. I do know using the GV number there are unlimited texts (main reason I got one), .
Will Handcent support that number? Will it be easy to manage both numbers for texting using this app?

Okay, so disregard the last question, how about this one:
I followed your advice and installed Handcent. I t works great, but the original text app is active and I am getting double notifications when I receive a new text-one from handcent and the other on the original app. I have to open both apps each to clear.

How do I "turn off" the original text app, and make Handcent the default app?
Hopefully it is easy to return to original if I choose?

...etting double notifications...

How to Disable Droid Text Message Default Notification

1.  Touch and Drag Up "Applications Tab"
2.  Select "Messaging"
3.  Select "Menu"
4.  Select "Settings"
5.  Select "Notifications" Display message notifications in status bar
