t's in the Programming menu. Use the Programming Menu at your own risk. There are options/settings in this menu that should not be manipulated. That's my disclaimer
On your dialpad dial ##PROGRAMthen press SEND

The SPC password is 000000

Now you should be at the Programming Menu. From the list press "04 Vocode"

Now you can select 13k, EVRC (default option), or EVRC-B

After you select one, back out to your home screen and your phone will reset.

That's it.

Keep in mind, I don't really understand why EVRC-B isn't already the default option on this phone. There may be a good reason. There may not. Hopefully someone from Verizon or Motorola will chime-in and answer my original post.

Changed Subject Title to clarify Topic and moved to Hidden-Menu Discussion.

For those that aren't familia with EVRC...

Enhanced Variable Rate CODEC (EVRC) is a speech codec used in CDMA networks. It was developed in 1995 to replace the QCELP vocoder which used more bandwidth on the carrier's network, thus EVRC's primary goal was to offer the mobile carriers more capacity on their networks while not increasing the amount of bandwidth or wireless spectrum needed.[1]. EVRC uses RCELP technology, which Qualcomm claims improves speech quality with lower bit rates.[citation needed]

EVRC compresses each 20 milliseconds of 8000 Hz, 16-bit sampled speech input into output frames of one of three different sizes: full rate – 171 bits (8.55 kbit/s), half rate – 80 bits (4.0 kbit/s), eighth rate – 16 bits (0.8 kbit/s). A quarter rate was not included in the original EVRC specification and eventually became part of EVRC-B.

A user who enabled EVRC-B stated:  EVRC-B seems a tad cleaner with less of a garbled digital sound. It could just be in my head that I'm hearing better quality but I'm still on EVRC-B and I think that I can understand my callers (mostly my girlfriend) a little better...

I was searching the net for additonal information and found...

I am not from Motorola but I can tell you that EVRC is chosen as default as most of the USA already uses EVRC.  In some markets (don't know the number so I am stating some) like Atlanta they have EVRC-B set as preferred at the switching center.

So regardless of what your phone is set at it will make the call in EVRC-B.   However, if you change your phone to EVRC-B and you go to a market which does not yet support EVRC-B then your not going to be able to make calls at all. So I caution those that make the setting to EVRC-B.

More information can be found on Droid Speech Quality (EVRC, EVRC-B, and 13K).
