I've been reading through a lot of Droid Forum issues and found something that is very interesting.  If you look under your battery you will find a code that has the following format:  XX/09

Seems that the first two digits represent the Week of Manufacture and the last (09) represents the year.  The oldest one listed was Week 38 and the latest Week 44.

My Droid has:  44/09

Now, some of the problems reported (on this thread) seem to isolate a few problems based on the Week of Manufacture.  Interesting isn't it!

Here a person took the time to compare (he returned one Droid for another) his issues between Week 39 and Week 40 ( few big differences going from 39/09 to 40/09 - November 14, 2009)

WEEK 39/09

  • In the closed position, I could press the top left of the screen and it would smack against my keyboard... really loud and annoying.
  • Calls had a ticking sound in the background that would come in and out at random.
  • I had 4 crashes/reboots with the device over the course of a week. Not too bad I guess?  It seemed to happen in the android market whenever I went to landscape mode and if I was scrolling fast on a webpage.
  • Camera green lines would come 1 out of every 20-25 attempts. Barcode scanner had issues too. Looks like all of this will be fixed in a software update anyway.
  • Battery life could last me throughout one day with small/medium usage, but no more. Not bad considering some of the other stories I've read.

WEEK 40/09

  • Rock solid construction, I can't make it click no matter how hard I press.
  • Calls are much clearer without that stupid ticking sound, and even in general, they're less muffled.
  • No reboots when I tried 10-15 times to crash it like my old phone. But, since I've only had it for a day, the jury is still out on this.
  • I know we think it's a software issue, but I don't understand why this camera is focusing so much better than my other one. Green lines are nearly 50%. Bar code scanner works much better too.
  • No idea yet. I heard that you shouldn't run the battery down at first, so I charged it up last night fully. Now, I'll see how it does.
  • I noticed that, although there is some bleeding from the lights behind the soft buttons on the bottom, they seem much brighter than my other phone. I like this better, I think.

Very interesting. I have a 40/09 so I may have barely lucked out.

I'm curious to see what week I get for my Droid I purchased on eBay. We will see...

I remember when the iPod Touch FIRST came out, everyone was freaking out about which week they would get because some of them had worse screens than different weeks. It had something to do with which factory they were produced in. Although if I remember correctly, the screen issues were fixed with a software update. The good thing about phones today, is that ALMOST all issues with a phone can either be fixed or compensated for with a software update.
