Another noobie question:

For whatever stupid reason, I wanted to run my battery completely down. I did. Then I plugged it into my PC to charge but I can't tell if it is charging or not. Everyone in a while the black screen says:

Bootloader
2c.6c


battery low
cannot program

What does this mean? Is my phone charging and will this go away as it gets more charged? Or have I screwed up?

 Interesting...I will assume you didn't "root" or mess with the Android OS (not that you would tell me!

1.  Make sure you Droid isn't plugged into PC or A/C Adapter - STOP!
2.  Take the battery out of your Droid - STOP!
3.  Wait three minutes - STOP!
4.  Put battery back into Droid - STOP!
5.  Plug your Droid into your A/C Adapter (not USB/PC) - STOP!
6.  Wait two full hours - STOP
7.  Turn on your Droid - STOP
8.  If you still have the "boot" problem - return it to Verizon.

Wow - just noticed I forgot to tell you to put the battery back into the Droid (Step 4.)!

Just thought I would follow up with this.  I took the battery out for a while and then put it back in.  When I got to my truck, I plugged my Droid into the car changer and it started right up and started charging.

So, yes, it seems that the USB laptop connection isn't strong enough to kickstart the Droid from zero %.
